Yamaha WR450F 2012 Review

The 2012 Yamaha WR450F is here. But before we get into everything new, updated, borrowed and unique, you might want to ask yourself what your perfect 450cc-class off-road bike would be. Don’t compromise. Set your expectations high. After all, this is 2012.
We’d like to think a manufacturer could build a perfect bike for you, and never mind the fact that they have DOT, EPA, CARB and a slew of other acronyms to appease. We want two-stroke lightness, four-stroke traction, fuel-injected smoothness, plush suspension that never bottoms out, and we want it to look universally awesome and at the same time unique. We want it street legal and I want to race it, too. And make it cheap.
Knowing our consumer-bred difficulty going into this exercise is why it’s so exciting to test the latest offerings from the off-road motorcycle manufacturers. Just how close can they get? Well, Yamaha’s 2012 WR450 is the end result of a whole bunch of listening, tuning, tweaking, theorizing, manipulating, fixing and breaking stuff all in the name of finding the closest thing to perfection.

All New
Yamaha is showing some solid dedication to off-road with the release of this bike. In fact, the 2012 WR450F release breaks a stalemate of Japanese innovation, improvement and excitement in the off-road segment. The last new model - and the only fuel-injected version – we’ve seen from Japan was the Suzuki RMX450Z which debuted in 2010 as a motocrosser in disguise and is now off the American market altogether. Honda’s CRF450X is a workhorse for the big red brand, but it hasn’t changed much more than with minor tweaks here and there. Kawasaki’s KLX450R came quietly into the market in 2008, and we’ve had nary a bold new graphic from Team Green since. Yamaha itself hasn’t truly released a new WR since 2007! This bike is overdue, and the Yamaha faithful can finally be stoked.

While Yamaha has taken its sweet time bringing the new WR450F to market, it seems it’s done so with direct intention. The WR family has been a beacon of dependability, durability, customer satisfaction and ease-of-use for a long time. In the most-previous rendition, the WR450 specifically enjoyed a more-than-capable aluminum frame that kept the bike feeling new for years. The motor is a workhorse, producing ample ponies through great carburetor performance and a solid ride across the board with plush suspension tunable for almost any use. Stability is king with the WR, and straight-line performance has never been a question. Neither has dependability with the traditional five-titanium-valve cylinder head giving hundreds of hours of flawless performance to most. Add in a highly-functional enduro computer, decent stock headlight, comfortable ergos for a range of pilot sizes, and you start to see why Yamaha didn’t mess with the bike so long.
However, the old WR has its limits if used for more than just a dependable trail bike. It’s heavy by racing standards and doesn’t exude total confidence in the tightest of trails with the highest potential for tip-overs because of its sheer mass. It is low-slung and prone to finding the edge of ruts sooner than others, and it had a case of the wallows if ridden past stock suspension valving limits or speed.
Consumer Demand by the Numbers
Yamaha has been listening to its customers (and WR owners in particular) for quite some time. They’ve seen what people are buying and they know how they’re using these machines.
Current WR owners use their Yamaha WR for tight trails/woods riding nearly half the time they start them up. The next closest terrain is a virtual tie between fire roads and open desert riding. The vast majority of use by frequency is seen in the tight stuff. Surprised?
Another surprise to some may be the fact that a lot of WR owners race their machines. Recreationally focused off the dealer floor or not, Yamaha buyers are picking up WR250 and WR450 bikes and paying to race. As you might have guessed from the above paragraph, they’re racing mostly Enduros, Cross Country races and Hare Scrambles.

Sure, you’ve seen Randy Hawkins and the AmPro Yamaha team tear it up on highly modified WR’s for a few years. Despite what the fastest racers do, Yamaha studies show that everyday WR owners race their machines and they’re mostly self-proclaimed intermediates. These aren’t first-timers. They aren’t paid to race. They’re people like most of us who want a do-it-all machine that does it all perfectly.
With this data in hand, Yamaha went to the owners who are riding tight trails and racing on the weekends and asked them what they could do to improve their favorite bike. The answers are obvious. Make it lighter. Make it feel lighter. Improve the suspension. Give it fuel injection. Give it more fuel range. Make it look more awesome (I added that one, but I’m sure someone said that in the surveys). In the end, they came up with this concept: combine 450F power with a 250F chassis to make a precise and potent off-road weapon, focused squarely on cross-country and enduro racing.
While not as bold as KTM’s “Ready to Race” tagline, the focus from Yamaha on the competitive underbelly of off-road motorcycling is pretty aggressive. Yamaha executives further promised a more nimble ride, an easier-to-handle ride at a faster pace (more tuned to higher level racers), and the highest spec components available.
Engine Injection and More
To get to this new race-focused WR, Yamaha isn’t fixing what isn’t broken. The 449cc DOHC, Titanium five-valve, dry sump Yamaha powerplant still does the business of propulsion. Connected to a brand new fuel-Injection system and a wide-ratio 5-speed, the power and drivetrain on the WR remains proven, reliable and plenty powerful. However, they are refining things amongst its innards.

The engine orientation inside the chassis (we’ll get to the chassis soon) is kicked back to give the cylinder a more vertical stance. This picks the crank center up 5mm and puts the rotational mass of the dual cams closer to the center of the chassis. Gyroscopic forces inside the top of four-stroke motors have a significant effect on handling character and weight feel. The more spinning stuff is closer to the center of the machine, the better especially when flicking the bike side to side trying to change direction by leaning or when leaning with the front-end off the ground (essentially raising the spinning pieces even higher).

Down low, the big-end bearing and connecting rod are increased 1mm in width to increase durability. Also, the cam surface heat treatment has been revised to boost lifespan of the top spinners. The biggest news with the WR450 engine is easily the new EFI. Yamaha uses a 42mm Keihin fuel-injection system in the bike with a 12-hole injector for consistent performance and the lustful EFI throttle response MX bikes have been experiencing for a few years. Altitude, temperature and humidity now have little effect on your WR’s performance. And with beaucoup tunability, Yamaha ensures there are plenty of customizing options for race day.
The injection system is standard by today’s off-road and MX options. It has a lean-angle sensor with a tip-over switch to kill the engine in case of a fall or inversion lasting more than a handful of seconds. Yamaha isn’t telling us how long (for some reason) but they say in race situations, the bike will shut off if you’re non-responsive and the throttle’s stuck, for instance. Also, the bike won’t turn off too soon for silly tip-overs or playful loop-outs your buddies capture on film. I tested this plenty in the Florida sand, and it didn’t shut off by itself.

Also sending signals to the fuel delivery system is an intake air pressure sensor, throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor and water temperature sensor. The ECU is not tunable in stock form, but Yamaha has a good solution to that (yes, later). There’s a new intake boot to go along with the EFI system, and the easy-access air filter door stays put for filter changes that don’t cause cuss words to spill out of your face.

The fuel itself is held in an all-new 2.0 gallon fuel tank with the YZ450F-spec fuel pump nestled inside. I typed 2.0 because I secretly wish it said 2.5 or something more substantial behind the point. But, 2.0 is all we get for now. Range was not estimated at the press launch but some journalists went over 30 miles at a decent clip in power-sucking sand without a problem. We’ll guess somewhere in the 50-mile range when trail riding. The bike has a light that tells you when you’ve got a half-gallon left. Along with the on-board battery (for starting the beast), a new stator pumps up electrical output to 160 watts compared to the previous 120W. All of this juice goes to the EFI (no extra light juice, sorry). However, the EFI system can be completely independent of the battery in case you want to eliminate that sucker for maximum weight savings for, you know, racing the heck out of your dirt bike. Personally, I go for the button every time, but it’s nice to know the battery doesn’t need to be alive to make the bike fire.
Yamaha says the new WR450F radiators add 5% more coolant capacity, but they look bigger than that. The coolant overflow catch tank is intact and works well. If you manage to overcook the system, there is an escape hose that will spew steam from below the frame cradles. When this happens take the bike for a spin up and down a road or a straight section and lay off the clutch, would ya?
The last of the 2012 Yamaha WR450F engine updates is a longer (15mm longer) head pipe that incorporates a resonating chamber. Yamaha techs blame the mid-range lack of excitement they say is natural with EFI as the need for this change aimed at mid-range torque maintenance.
Sassy Chassis
While the previous generation WR was very capable at a wide range of racing and riding conditions, it had its limits in speed and agility. Yamaha addressed this directly with one of the most well-behaved modern motorcycle frames in the market—the YZ250F frame. Stable at speed, confident in the corners and solid, the bilateral-beam aluminum frame seems to blend the best of both worlds old and new. It feels narrower than full twin-spar jobs and doesn’t feel as non-existent or unsubstantial as the older Japanese steel frames used to be. While Yamaha engineers say the WR450F frame is “based-off” the YZ250F frame, we poked around and found out it really is more identical except for the engine mounts. Engine mounts can do a lot; don’t be fooled—look at some photos of James Stewart’s race bike sometime.
This new frame for the WR is said to be a more torsionally and horizontally rigid ride, but the head tube actually flexes a little more than the old frame. The new frame promises to eliminate wallowing and make rider input move the machine more efficiently. This little trick really masks some of the girth of the off-road big-boy. If it’s easier to move and doesn’t move against you, the bike will feel lighter and that’s what’s really important to saving energy while riding. When picking the bike up after going over the bars the new frame will not help. Yamaha engineers and test riders said the new frame/chassis setup was the most exciting part of the bike and something we’d feel immediately on the dirt.

One area of framemanship that differs entirely from the YZ250F is the sub-frame. Built specifically for the WR, this unit is responsible for holding unique stuff like batteries, electrical goodies and coolant catch tanks. It also is designed to be shorter at the back of the seat by 11mm over the previous WR version (easier to lift a leg over and lower overall seat height. The new WR is nearly an inch lower at the saddle (38.6” for 2011, 37.8” for 2012) while increasing ground clearance by 7mm. Swinging a leg over and moving back-and-forth is easier.
YZ Suspension Rules

Yamaha has been blessed with excellent suspension for a while now. The front ends of Yamaha’s have been butter smooth and plenty stout since incorporating the KYB Speed Sensitive fork. The air/oil separate speed sensitive system puts linear goodness to good use, and Kashima low-friction coatings slide nice. For the WR, this one addition is a monumental upgrade. The new fork drops the spring to the bottom, lowering mass, and the sheer upgrade in technology puts a realistically revalved fork on every new WR for 2012. The rear shock is dialed in and doesn’t disappoint. But the big story is in the YZ-spec fork.On top of everything else, the 2012 Yamaha WR450F has clearly gotten a facelift. The plastics all around are YZ250F-spec and put a narrower, nimble feeling at the knees and a nice, cool glare towards onlookers. It has a pretty bold headlight that is certainly scowling if not piercing. Night tests will show its effectiveness, but we expect it to be in line with the rest of Yamaha’s stock setups.
Complete the Package Price
The WR is truly new for 2012 and has a reasonable MSRP of $8,090. Adding consumer-demanded components like fuel injection, more nimble handling, a lighter feel, better suspension and an updated look to a historic performer in the off-road world should prove attractive to new and old Yamaha WR buyers alike—even those that might have considered going orange. If you’re looking at bottom-line numbers and performance, Yamaha is an attractive choice. And if you’re interested in racing, Yamaha has been paying special attention to you.

Yamaha is giving new WR owners a ton of attention with in-house engineered and designed parts from the GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) sub-brand. The first purchase a WR buyer (racing or not) should make isn’t fuel for the tank, it’s the $99.95 GYTR Competition Kit and ECU that allows the WR to become the machine it can be. In stock form, it comes with the same 1/8th throttle stop screw that has plagued unsuspecting WR owners for years. The GYTR kit includes a justified screw replacement in the throttle body to allow 100% opening. In conjunction, remove the smallest (only the smallest) insert in the muffler and you’re ready for action.More, the Competition Kit comes with a pre-programmed ECU that drops in quickly under the left number plate. While being mapped for the full throttle opening, this ECU upgrade comes with integration capabilities to Yamaha’s slick GYTR Power Tuner (sold separately for ($279.95). Even without the tuner—find a friend with a YZ that bought one first!—this is a must-buy for WR owners simply for the throttle screw and the potential to tune. Don’t want more power? Perfect! There is no better or easier way in off-road to precisely dial in more or less power, traction, fuel consumption, timing, delivery, hit, snap, punch, torque, or anything else you could ever want to do with a power delivery curve. And it’s easy. If you can find a song on your iPod or find a phone number in your cell phone you can adjust power on your WR with the tuner.
On top of this must-buy, GYTR offers over 100 performance parts for the 2012 WR450F. From grip donuts to $2,200 CNC Ported cylinder heads with hi-perf cams included. A big seller is sure to be the GYTR by FMF Slip-on Muffler for $299.95.

As an example of value, check this out: For our two days of testing in the Florida swampland, we ran the bike in two configurations. One had the stock ECU with the throttle screw and muffler insert fix done – essentially as stock as you can get while still being fully capable. The next day we ran a nice race setup with this list of GYTR add-ons: Competition Kit, GYTR by FMF muffler, radiator braces, flag-style hand guards, and a sleek rear disc guard. The total cost for all these parts is $544 out tha’ door. Added to the MSRP of $8,090 that’s over $500 CHEAPER than a stock KTM 450 XC-W (based on a $9,200 MSRP).
Florida Torture
The opening round of the GNCC series in Florida is notoriously brutal. Yamaha is confident enough in their new WR450F to take it right to the fight there. Soul-sucking sand reaches up at every moment trying to pull the last carbohydrate and water droplet out of your system. It’s no cakewalk for bikes either. Imagine two-foot-deep sand whoops for 13 miles mixed with a nice blend of clutch killing pine trees and simply horrific Palmetto fields. A Palmetto is a small palm tree that grows along the ground before growing skyward. When raced through, you essentially deal with their stumps (laying on the ground and pointing vertically at random) which do their best to stop you in your tracks/murder you.

In stock tune, the biggest surprise (as predicted by Yamaha officials) was the much more capable chassis and suspension. Immediately, the WR wallow nearly vanished. The new bike is more nimble and reacts much faster to rider input. In case you make an unintelligent input, the bike helps you cover your mistakes a lot better as well. Nothing tests limits of stability and chassis flex more than repetitious-yet-random sand whoops. The big bikes usually bury themselves in the gaps and spring off the mounds unpredictably. Only when really ridden to the point of drastic mistakes did the WR rear a faint sign of behaving like a big, heavy four-stroke.
Equal credit here is due to the fork system and settings as it is the MX chassis rigidity and flex blend. No, there weren’t many landings, per se, but the slow-stroke full-suspension movement delivered by the ledges and sandy moguls provided a brutal test of compliance. Stutter bumps (Palmetto roots) were absorbed almost magically at speed. Plush enough to make a magic carpet ride and progressive ahead of the big move curve is a combination that usually comes from a custom revalve. Yamaha has given you the revalve if you’re less than 200 pounds. If you’re over that weight or pushing the pro-ranks, head to stiffer spring rates to keep it up in the stroke more, and I predict you’ll be extremely happy with the WR suspension and handling.

The 2012 motor feels just as responsive and powerful as ever, and the response is off the charts. Right off idle, the bike cracks off with a gallop of torque and acceleration that should be patented. Great roll-on power through the bottom end starts to accelerate into the mid quickly. You can run out of first and second gear sooner than you think, but third is nice and long and the WR has the power and consistency to pull the third cog in a wide range of terrain. Shifting is smooth, so use your left foot if necessary to drop to second. The bike isn’t stall-proof, and firing it up isn’t always immediate (the motor can churn without igniting). I’m hoping with some power tuning, the electric starting performance is improved.
The bottom-to-mid power really enhances this lighter weight feel of the WR. More responsive bikes don’t wait for you to move them, they move themselves. Combined with chassis enhancements, the WR really does feel lighter than previous even though it’s technically a bit heavier on the scale. Top end power was good to push the WR into the upper 70-mph range with consistent, smooth yank.

Engine overheating wasn’t an issue, even with the less-than-ideal Florida conditions. Photo runs are essentially motionless with the bike running until it’s time to hit a spot, usually requiring plenty of clutch. The bike did bubble back to the catch tank a few times, but with a decent breeze blowing across the radiators it seemed cool-headed enough. Everything else in our first day of testing went smoothly.
To really put the new WR to the test, we were entered in the two-hour morning event at the GNCC before it gets inhumanly nasty out there with the pros. Yamaha took the opportunity to set us up with a GYTR-kitted bike.
And the mods really work. First off, the Competition ECU and GYTR by FMF muffler don’t ruin the power. You might laugh at that but I’ve seen exhaust systems and pumped up ignitions totally destroy usability and powerband width. The GYTR mods don’t turn it into a tire-spinning useless snap-monster. They put more power to the ground across the board. Testing personnel from Yamaha described it as a more torquey delivery from top to bottom without more snap. They were right. I think there might be a bit more snap but not an obnoxious or bad amount (unless you’re really tired).
We ran the spark-arrestor screen in the muffler, and the sound output was beautiful—a good hot-rod note with a cleanliness to it that is perfect for racing. Too loud for me to trail ride all the time (and the power from the stock muffler is really nice for off-road recreational riding), but for closed-course racing, this combo is dynamite.
The rest of the GYTR catalog we threw at the WR worked without interference—as designed. I didn’t test the radiator braces, but I tried (sand is soft). The Cycra flag guards kept the Florida foliage from smashing my knuckles.
Race situations provide unique, real-world feedback you can’t find on a casual trail ride or a photo shoot. From out-braking a competitor to a corner to wheel-hopping a whoop rhythm section to bust past a ledge, the 13-mile lap of a GNCC course brings everything from rutted swampland to high-speed grass track. The WR made all conditions seem like it was born to perform there. It was very impressive throughout.
In the heat of battle millimeters of movement make a big difference. The chassis upgrades give you more energy towards the end of a race, and suspension performance can keep you out of harm’s way as your mental integrity breaks down with exhaustion. The YZ-inspired bodywork and tank combine with the lower/flatter seat to make the WR effortless to move around on. From standing through the whoops to sliding forward in beautiful sand berms, the bike has moto-mobility to the max.
During the heat of battle a few things came up that I wish the WR did better. First on the list is the aforementioned starting. Kick-starting was consistent as heck during my practice starts (GNCC racing is dead engine starting), but on most e-start bikes, I can combine a kick with a button and ignite it every time. This combo didn’t work at all on the WR. And it’s much faster (usually) to kick than to push the button in a race-start situation. Of course, when the flag dropped, the bike didn’t fire and I kicked it a couple times before heading onto the course. Typical for me, really.
Second, I think hand guards should be standard on off-road bikes. The WR is likely to be used more than half the time in tight trails and woods, yet it lacks standard hand protection. It has a fantastic, full-coverage, tough plastic  plate that is absolutely perfect in my opinion, but nothing for my digits. 2012 Yamaha WR450F skid plateThird, I think the WR brake performance needs to step up to beat the leaders in the class. I didn’t have a ton of issues, but I didn’t like how I had to pump the front a couple times to get good lever feel – I’d rather have more power in the binders than I need. For a race-ready ride, I want big-time brakes.
Lastly, I think most off-road riders would appreciate a few more positive decimals behind the 2.0 in fuel capacity. Off-road tests will determine what the actual range is.
Conclusion
In the off-road motorcycle world, there has been a monopoly taking place for the past few years. It’s no secret KTM has introduced troves of new models to display the company’s dominance in the marketplace of niches. It’s really hard to compete with that as a brand if you’re only making two off-road-specific models.
Head-to-head, Yamaha thinks it’s got something that can stand up to the XC-W. While no one came out and said they’re gunning for orange, the value of the WR and the first race test I experienced puts it in the ballpark, at least.  With an MSRP of just $8,090 plus the GYTR kit, it’s $1100 less than KTM’s 450 XC-W.

No matter how the WR stacks up in the months to come, Yamaha has clearly succeeded in providing a drastic improvement in a stagnant model. And they did it with you in mind. So ask yourself again what you want your off-road 450 to do for you. I can’t quite find something this WR couldn’t handle with ease.

Yamaha Zuma 125 2012 Review

If riding a small-bore scooter leaves you feeling emasculated, consider the Yamaha Zuma 125. Rugged, aggressive styling (especially in black), fat, semi-knobby tires and power enough to shoot its rider across an intersection faster than the average automobile, the Zuma 125 is as virile as it is affordable.
Whereas most scooters are variables of a central street-legal, urban theme, Yamaha’s Zuma 125 radiates a more adventurous attitude with a look that says “let’s go camping,” or “go ahead, take off down that fire road and let’s see where it goes.” Conveying this venturesome spirit are the fat for 12-inch rims (120/70 front and 130/70 rear), enduro-esque tires.
An exposed large-diameter steel frame is a styling element that allows Yamaha designers to use less plastic on the Zuma than other scooters. The plastic on the bottom of the Zuma is, in fact, left unpainted to better absorb the resultant scratches off-road riding generates. Hands protected by brushguards, large, dual headlights surrounded by steel crash bars, and front suspension shrouded in fork gaiters all conspire to elevate the off-road legitimacy of the Zuma.
The Zuma exhibits a harsh ride due to seriously stiff spring rates (exacerbated by inadequate rebound damping), but having recently sampled the Honda PCX, whose suspension suffers an inversely proportionate problem, I prefer over-sprung to under-sprung in this scenario. Considering the Zuma’s off-road proclivities, Yamaha may have stiffened the spring rate to better absorb some of the off-road punishment a Zuma may endure compared to a pavement-only scoot.
At 50.8 inches the Zuma has a shorter wheelbase than competing scooters of equal displacement. If Yamaha had stretched the Zuma a couple more inches it may have been enough to restyle the below-seat fuel tank and enlarge the storage compartment to allow room for a full-face helmet. As is, an open-face helmet fits within the limited confines, but only just. And while at it, we’d suggest re-contouring the seat, because the current one is wide enough to make flat-footing a difficult accomplishment, even for someone of six-foot stature. Short riders not well-versed in holding up a motorcycle with one foot will feel nervous, but the Zuma’s light weight makes it easy enough.
The air-cooled 4-stroke 125cc Single powering the Zuma produces enough ponies to keep the Zuma competitive with aggressive commuter traffic. Electronic fuel injection helps make it quick to start and delivers flawless throttle response. Not freeway-legal, the approximately 60-mph top end is enough for most surface streets. Its CVT automatic transmission provides user-friendly – no clutching or shifting – forward propulsion. The 220mm single disc and dual-piston caliper up front and drum rear brake exuding surprisingly abundant stopping power.

Curiously, the Zuma’s blinkers, when engaged, emit a clicking noise akin to the decibel level of those on vintage American cars – pedestrians can literally hear it from the crosswalk. Yamaha, please, muffle that embarrassing noise. Also, what’s with the extended rear fender? The Zuma already has a snug-fitting inner fender, so the elongated second fender is nothing more than ugly overkill.
Otherwise, Yamaha did grace the Zuma with niceties such as a fuel gauge and angled valve stems.
For those looking for simple, inexpensive ($3,350), fuel-efficient (we got 58 mpg under heavy throttle application) two-wheel travel but are averse to the effeminate scooter association, the Zuma 125 is more lumberjack than it is ladybug. The Zuma does what other scooters do, then leaves them in the dust when the going gets dirty.

Yamaha YZF-R15 2012 Review

Small-displacement sportbikes are getting more attention as the world economy continues to struggle. The 150cc Yamaha YZF-R15 was the first sportbike produced in India back in 2008, and the fuel-injected model now receives a host of upgrades and is offered to the Australian, New Zealand and Colombian markets. Read the below review and let us know if such a small sportbike could be successful in North America.


Yamaha’s YZF-R15 has offered riders the ultimate sportbike in its 150cc segment, managing to retain the unadulterated feel of its legendary mentors, the supersports YZF-R6 and R1.
Leaned over mid-corner, tires fiercely gripping the tarmac, its engine screaming out the high revs it craves, this Yamaha has treated aspiring sportbike riders ever since its launch. The lean and compact, technology-packed R15 represents a mean package, accelerating, turning and stopping with the aggression of a precision, laser-guided missile.


Powering around a set of corners at the Madras Motorsports track,  India, the YZF-R15 Version 2.0 feels every bit as good as Yamaha’s “Racing Instinct” philosophy suggests. Just how much better is the R15 V2.0, and can it reignite the passion amongst sport bikers as did the original?
The list of changes is extensive. Although the aggressive twin-headlights remain familiar, there’s a beefier mid-fairing region, now with slotted vents that Yamaha claim improve the motorcycle’s aerodynamic efficiency by 4 percent. A stylish new mock carbon fiber panel looks a part of the frame, while V 2.0 also boasts an extensively altered, steeply angled and waspish looking split-seat.
At the rear you spot a higher, YZF-R6 inspired LED tail-lamp. Below this sits a smartly machined, alloy number plate and turn indicator mount. The exhaust is far better looking, more aggressively angled and you can’t miss the elaborate new rear wheel hugger which doesn’t really fit in well on a sportbike like this.
2012 Yamaha YZF-R15Look closer and finer changes are apparent; the still compact R15 looking longer than its predecessor, as its wheelbase has extended 55mm (nearly 2 inches), thanks to a new alloy swingarm, rare for this class of motorcycle. A larger 130/70 section radial rear tire completes the muscular looking rear. The front disc brake enjoys a larger carrier, while the rear disc is now slightly bigger at 220mm.
The ECU has modified tuning for improved throttle response, and the throttle operating cam is shaped for more linear response. Yamaha has sadly failed to add power to the new model, and enthusiasts are sure to feel let down when noticing the unchanged 16.8 hp at 8500 rpm peak power output. What’s more, the V2.0 tips the scales at 5kg (11 lbs) more than the original R15. It now claims a 300-pound curb weight.

A light, unobtrusive buzz from the 150cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder powerplant is familiar as I make my way around the track on a cautious initial lap.
What’s immediately apparent is how the power deliver has improved. Unlike earlier R15’s that had to be wound up to really get going, the V2.0 is clearly more responsive, with a healthier punch in the bottom and mid-range of its powerband. The bike revs cleanly to its 10,000-rpm limiter. This more user-friendly nature vastly improves the R15’s public road abilities, which was a sore point on the earlier motorcycle. As speeds increase, it’s clear that fears of any significant drop in performance are unfounded. Pleasantly, our tests confirm the new Yamaha as faster, the V2.0 achieving 100 kph (62.5 mph) from standstill half a second quicker than managed by us on the older motorcycle, in 14.14 seconds.
Yamaha’s steel Deltabox frame is the magic wand that grants the R15 rock-solid poise around corners, and an almost feline-like affinity for quick direction changes. It’s a case of the best getting better, the longer alloy swingarm and improved tires significantly improving stability. A big change is palpable when attacking corners, with some negligible sacrifice to flickability, but a newfound stability there for the asking in a corner. The R15 V2.0 is more forgiving, and prods you to ride harder and faster. The sportier riding position and heavier front weight bias provide a more connected, direct feel, which experienced riders will exploit to extract better pace.

The revised, Indian-made MRF tires provide solid grip when leaned over or under hard braking. We found nothing but absolute commitment even when expecting rear wheel hop while pushing hard over patchy, bumpy tarmac. The bite from the front brake is hard to fault, always powerful enough, while still progressive.

Street riders have dealt with the R15’s shortcomings before, and so have only about as much to complain about, with the bonus of improved power delivery attempting to make up in some measure for the uncomfortable riding position.
Paying more for this upgraded model despite no peak power gains are might seem to hold back this revised model, and the R15’s brilliant chassis truly begs for more power to match its perfectly sorted dynamics. The competition is only intensifying with every passing day, which means Yamaha still need to pull their gloves off a little further, with even more conviction.

Yamaha YZF-R1 2012 Review

“Take that turn over there as hard as you can. When you get the bike fully on its side, whack the throttle to the stop.”
In my mind I still have the fearless aspiration on a motorcycle that I did when I first started riding, but maybe as I get older my self-preservation instincts have started to form a bigger influence on me. Clearly, executing the above scenario would be a recipe for disaster. In fact, I’ve done it once before.
With the bike firmly on my knee, maximum lean angle achieved and a greedy throttle hand, I twisted my wrist as far as it would go, hoping to get a vicious drive out of the corner to pass the guy in front of me. Instead, my boneheaded move landed me right on my head. I haven’t repeated that move since, but the 2012 Yamaha YZF-R1, now with traction control, gave me a feeling that maybe it was time to give it another whirl. And I did. So much for those self-preservation instincts.

This time around, however, the result was different. Instead of violently spinning the rear tire and going sideways rather than forwards, in a fraction of a second the R1 performed its numerous calculations, determined I was trying to drive out of a turn, and instead of throwing me over the highside, delivered just enough power to the ground to keep me going forward with minimal wheel spin. A believer I became.


Such is the beauty of traction control. Combine that with the R1’s crossplane crankshaft that delivers a seemingly direct connection between the rear tire and the rider, and you’ve got a motorcycle that inspires confidence in spades.
More of the Same
Besides the new traction control system, however, the new R1 is largely the same machine we’ve had since 2009. It’s still powered by the same 998cc inline-Four cylinder engine, using crossplane crankshaft technology derived from MotoGP. Power output remains the same which, according to our 2009 Literbike Shootout, means 146.1 horsepower to the rear wheel at 11,800 rpm. That number was the lowest of the quartet back then, and with new models today knocking on the door of 200 (crankshaft) horsepower, it’s interesting to think Yamaha may have missed the boat in adding more power for this 2012 redesign. Though surely nobody will argue that roughly 150 horsepower reaching the rear wheel is still some serious gusto for forward propulsion.

Both Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) and Intake (YCC-I) are carryovers to the 2012 model, with the former gaining even more significance with the addition of traction control. If you’re not familiar, YCC-T is corporate speak for electronic or “fly-by-wire” throttle technology, while YCC-I is in reference to the variable intake stacks that extend past a certain rpm to provide maximum torque down low and horsepower up high in the rev range.
More carryovers include the three-position D-Mode, or “Drive Mode,” which, at the flick of a button, alters throttle, fuel and ignition mapping for various road conditions. A, B and Standard mode remain the same, with Standard mode providing the optimum overall performance. “A” mode puts more emphasis on acceleration in low-mid rpm, while “B” mode meanwhile does the opposite – providing a 30% slower throttle response at all openings – for those times when the road ahead is slippery and traction is compromised.

Minor Changes
While the addition of traction control is clearly the most significant addition to the new R1, Yamaha has also decided to clean it up around the edges. Subtle tweaks to the headlight cowling include larger LED position lamps at the outer edges, with reflectors added to the lower portion of the cowling – similar to Audi cars – to bolster the attitude from the front end compared to last year’s model.

All is status quo on the chassis front, save for a new rear spring on the fully-adjustable shock that is slightly stiffer at the beginning of the stroke and softer at the end. Yamaha believes this will improve rear traction while also providing a smoother ride through better bump absorption. Other than that, the chassis remains the same. Steering geometry is untouched, with a 24-degree rake and four inches of trail. Front suspension is still the same with a fully-adjustable 43mm inverted fork, with one stanchion controlling rebound damping and the other compression.
Footpegs also remain the same from last year, with its two-way adjustability allowing them to move up and backward from their standard position 15mm and 3mm, respectively. The pegs themselves are knurled all the way to the tip for better boot grip, something the older model didn’t have. Other minor tweaks include new muffler heat shields and end cap design, which give the rear of the R1 a narrower image. Finally, a new top triple clamp design is inspired by the YZR-M1 MotoGP machine. All told, it would be difficult to notice the difference between the 2012 R1 and its predecessors at first glance; it really takes an in-depth look to be able to tell the two apart.
Paying Tribute
Yamaha is very aware and proud of its racing heritage, which started in 1961. To commemorate its 50th year in racing, the factory MotoGP team ran special red/white liveries, similar to the colors used on its original GP effort, at four races this year. If you attended or paid attention to the broadcasts of the MotoGP race at Laguna Seca this year, you might have noticed Kenny Roberts and Eddie Lawson doing parade laps on R1s with these same liveries. In case you thought those were special, one-off editions, think again. Yamaha is going to produce this bike for the masses. Well, sort of. Only 2000 will be made for worldwide production, delineated by a number plate on the fuel tank. Besides the special color scheme and number plate, the 50th Anniversary Edition will feature gold tuning fork emblems and an accessory sticker kit to mimic the GP machine. Mechanically, however, it remains the same. This treatment will be given to the YZF-R6 as well.

Traction Control
We really should have seen this coming, the new R1 with traction control. Since its redesign in 2009 with the crossplane crankshaft, all the signs were pointing to it. With Yamaha’s Chip Controlled Throttle (YCCT) and three drive modes, all that was left to add was a system to limit unwanted spin from the rear tire. Well, the wait is over. The traction control has six levels of increasing intervention, plus a setting to turn the system completely off. Combine that with the three drive modes, and that makes for a total of 21 different settings to achieve your best lap time.

2012 Yamaha YZF-R1 right handlebarThe D-Mode drive mode system returns on the 2012 R1 with the same three settings: A, B and Standard. Standard provides the optimum throttle application in most situations, as A mode feels too abrupt and B is rather lackluster.
Yamaha engineers aimed to make this system as seamless as possible, without any unnatural or harsh intervention. By taking advantage of the YCC-T electronic throttle, the system uses wheel and engine speed sensors combined with throttle and gear position sensors, to constantly make calculations to control wheel spin depending on what setting the rider chooses. These four sensors send inputs to the ECU, which then calculates the amount of slip, determines whether this exceeds the preset value, and if so, reacts in four different ways. The system either uses the YCC-T to electronically close throttle valves, cut the fuel injection or retard the ignition timing, in no particular order. The fourth step is the illumination of the “TC” light in the gauge cluster which informs the rider the system is operating if they can’t tell already. These calculations are performed constantly and, according to Mike Ulrich from the testing department at Yamaha, at a “slightly faster” rate than its competitors, though Ulrich was not at liberty to say exactly how fast “slightly faster” is.
It’s important to note that the system does not utilize bank angle sensors. Using the sensors mentioned above, it senses signal changes that indicate tire circumference changes as the bike leans. A slow rate of change indicates the bike is leaning from side to side and doesn’t warrant intervention, as it can only do so at a certain rate. Plus, it’s highly unlikely that a rider is moving from side to side while accelerating at full throttle. The ECU stores this data and references it against the preset slip values for each of the six different TC settings. A faster signal change likely indicates a loss of traction and the need for intervention. Yamaha has calibrated the ECU to recognize and adapt to most popular tire sizes and gearing configurations, though to avoid the legal department working overtime, obviously stays clear of stating that it will work for all tire sizes and/or gearing combos.
That said, an interesting side note about the R1’s electronics package is that, should any part of the system malfunction, the on-board diagnostics will immediately send a specific fault code directly to the gauge cluster. All a certified mechanic will have to do then is simply reference that code to a master list and address the problem. No removal of bodywork needed. It’s likely that tools won’t be needed either. Just a computer.
The goal of traction control is to limit slip which, theoretically, should improve lap times. However, despite how counterintuitive it sounds on paper, tires need a certain amount of slip in a racetrack setting, often to help them finish off a corner by steering with the throttle. Yamaha has taken this into account and feels as though its system in its lower intervention settings still allows plenty of slip if needed.
Hype or Revelation?
2012 Yamaha YZF-R1The new R1’s street manners haven’t changed much from the previous version. Heat emanating from the engine and undertail exhausts radiates directly to the rider, which is especially brutal on warm days.
Of course, talk is cheap and I wanted to see what the new bike is like to ride. To do that, Yamaha invited journalists to Palm Springs, California for a street ride on the new R1 followed by a day at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway to really put the bike through its paces. On the street the new R1 felt much like the old R1 – because it practically is. The sound coming from the crossplane crankshaft is musical, while the power delivery borders on telepathic. The relatively torquey motor compared to the previous generation (pre-2009) makes leaving stoplights a much easier task for those ill-trained in smooth clutch operation.
In the canyons, the new R1 was a relatively simple machine to pilot. Turn-in doesn’t require much effort, and it holds an arc with ease. An updated version of the Dunlop Qualifier II tire is now spooned onto the wheels, replacing the D210s, and is a specific compound for the R1. I found the tires to be surprisingly compliant over the bumps on the poorly maintained roads we were riding on.
Our street ride came on a particularly warm day in Palm Springs which would test how well the new muffler heat guards really work. One complaint that’s common with motorcycles equipped with undertail exhausts is that the heat radiates directly to the rider, the R1 being no exception. Unfortunately, this still proved true on the 2012 machine. At stops, the engine and exhaust heat combined to toast my legs to medium-rare status. Of course, the triple digit ambient temps on the day didn’t help matters any.
Considering conditions were just about perfect for a street ride, the chance to test the new traction control system would have to wait until the track portion of our test. Which is coming up now...

Hype or Revelation, Racetrack Edition
To save the suspense, I’ll say it up front: Yamaha’s new traction control system on the 2012 R1 works exactly as advertised. I was pleasantly surprised by how seamless it intervenes. Normally when I test motorcycles with traction control, I start the day with the maximum intervention settings so I can feel just how early and abruptly the system kicks in. And normally, I’ll feel the system kick in at a time I personally feel isn’t necessary (say, almost completely upright). That feeling is one of harsh bucking and stuttering as the system limits the amount of fuel or spark to the engine. That harshness kills drive, which ultimately affects lap times. As the intervention settings come down and more slip is allowed, sometimes I can still feel the stuttering from the engine. Some manufacturers have calibrated their settings better than others, and admittedly, many of today’s literbikes that offer traction control have systems that are very linear and much less unsettling for the rider.
Yamaha’s system takes that to another level. Even with the TC settings set to max, forward propulsion is still strong with hardly a hint of stuttering. To put it (and myself) to the test, I relived that fateful day where I whacked the throttle open with the bike on its side. This time around, however, the R1 drove out of the corner as best it could, the indicator light on the dash glaring at me the entire time. That said, the maximum setting still holds the rider back, but this was a good baseline starting point to feel what the system would do under lower settings with less intervention. Levels five and six (the two most intervening modes) also act as a wheelie control.

Changing TC settings is simple, just flick the toggle switch on the left bar. The corresponding gauge on the dash tells you where you’re at. The throttle must be shut to change settings, and to turn the system off, the bike must be stopped and the toggle must be held down for two seconds. In the lower settings plenty of slip is available to leave long, dark black marks on the pavement. For the majority of fast riders out there, they’ll probably enjoy the lower settings the most. However, the best riders and racers will still be able to set their quickest times with the system completely off.
As for the rest of the bike, there’s not much new to report. After some initial suspension tuning, I found that mid-corner stability was outstanding, with the ability to change my line at will. Side-to-side transitions took some slight effort, as its 454-pound wet weight is among the highest in the literbike class. Surprisingly, the addition of traction control added zero weight to the new model compared to last year.
2012 Yamaha YZF-R1At 454 pounds, the R1 is still one of the heavier literbikes on the market. But that doesn’t take away from its fun factor.
The connection between the throttle hand and the rear tire is an aspect about the crossplane crankshaft R1 we’ve loved since its introduction, and that continues with the new model. I did notice a bit of vibration at low rpm when accelerating out of a turn, but for the most part the vibey nature from the crossplane crankshaft engine is quelled through counterbalancers and is a non-issue.
Brakes on the R1 are also unchanged, which means dual 310mm discs are clamped by radially mounted six-piston calipers that have great stopping power but lack outright feel at the lever. Despite using wheel-speed sensors for the traction control system, ABS is not a feature on the new bike.

My complaints about the new R1 are nothing we haven’t mentioned before on these pages so there’s little point in rehashing them. Traction control is clearly the main talking point here, and deservedly so. It’s among, if not the, best traction control systems that currently comes standard on a production motorcycle. Next year’s literbike showdown will be an interesting one as traction control systems will be a new metric by which to judge the field.
Pricing for the 2012 YZF-R1 starts at $13,990, and climbs to $14,490 for the 50th Anniversary Edition. Expect to see them in showrooms in the coming months.

Yamaha Zuma 50F 2012 Review

Scooters have long been associated as the transportation method of choice for students and those looking to maximize their mileage from a gallon of gasoline. Among the many choices available, Yamaha’s venerable Zuma has been a staple of college parking lots since 1989. Indeed, since 1997, Zuma sales have reached nearly 80,000 units, with the second generation accounting for nearly 64,000 units sold since its introduction in September 2001. The recipe for success is simple, too: mix mildly rugged looks, Yamaha reliability, an affordable price and everyday practicality in the form of storage space and fuel economy. Then, just reap the rewards.
Change, however, is inevitable. While the world makes a push for cleaner power sources and maximum fuel economy, the Zuma soldiered on with its 49cc two-stroke engine. While still wildly economical at a claimed 123 mpg, its powerplant didn’t make Mother Nature happy, nor did it provide much torque. Over time, owners complained that the seating position was sloped too far forward, placing a lot of weight on the arms. That problem was exacerbated with a pillion on board.


So was born the 2012 Yamaha Zuma 50F. At first glance the 50F doesn’t appear to be much different from the model it replaces. Blame it on the focus groups. They helped dictate the direction of the third-generation Zuma’s styling. They indicated that styling and fuel mileage were the two biggest factors when determining which scoot to buy. Yamaha showed these focus groups a myriad of different design sketches ranging from radical to subdued, and as the elimination process progressed, a pattern emerged: the twin bug-eye headlights from the previous model were huge hits that shouldn’t be touched, and clean, comfortable and simple styling was preferred over “plasticky,” sharp designs.

The end result is a machine that looks much like its predecessor. The fact that other styling cues were carried over makes the old and new even harder to distinguish. It’s not until you look closely that you notice the slight tweaks. The side panels and front fender are reminiscent of dirt bikes, while the knobby-ish tires and easily replaceable tube-type handlebar inspire some semblance of off-road pretenses. All are similar to their counterparts on the outgoing model, but aren’t quite the same.
The biggest styling difference with the new Zuma and the old is in the ergonomics. Where the old model had the rider and passenger sloped forward, the 50F comes with a flatter, broader seat that lends to roomier ergos for both rider and passenger.
With the looks of the new Zuma out of the way, getting more mileage out of the tiny engine was the next task. Of course the biggest difference overall compared to the previous model is the all-new powerplant. Gone is the 49cc two-stroke and in its place is a SOHC, liquid-cooled, three-valve four-stroke engine of the same displacement. It also sports fuel injection and roller rocker arms for reduced friction. An automatic CVT transmission takes care of shifting duties, and best of all, at least as far as Mother Nature is concerned, it’s much cleaner burning. Yamaha claims more torque and better throttle response compared to the two-stroke. Fuel misers will rejoice in the fact the Zuma 50F gets even better mileage than before — to the tune of 132 miles per gallon (claimed). No, that’s not a typo.
Further changes include moving the 1.2-gallon fuel tank to the center floorboard tunnel instead of underneath the seat. This in turn lowers the center of gravity for better handling and frees up space in the under-seat storage compartment, which now holds 23 liters of stuff. Other convenience bits include an integrated cup holder, a fold-out hook to hold things like groceries, and a rear luggage rack and grab bar to strap down bigger (though not too big) items.

Yamaha chose to invite the press to San Francisco to get a taste of the new Zuma 50F in one of the harshest environments for scooters. If you know San Francisco at all, then you know what I’m talking about. This town is filled with steep hills that punish engines. On top of that, Yamaha arranged a scavenger hunt for the assembled journalists that included stops in every corner of the city. Not only would the Zuma’s hill-climbing ability be tested (often), but its maneuverability through traffic would be put to the test as well.

While I admit that I haven’t spent considerable time on the old model, I do remember the seating position to be a little sloped. As promised, that’s no longer the case on the new Zuma. The seat is in fact flatter with less weight placed on the arms. As a result, seat height is a smidge taller than the old model at 30.7 inches (compared to 30.1 inches), but my 5-foot, 8-inch frame had no problems putting both feet on the ground solidly.
Ergos aside, the main thing on the mind of all the journos in attendance was the engine. How would it perform? Well, with a top speed of 40 mph I wasn’t expecting much, and there’s no getting around the fact that with only 50cc the Zuma wasn’t going to win any speed contests. That said, low-end torque from the little four-stroke engine is stronger than the old two-stroke mill, evident especially when leaving a dead stop. The CVT automatic was mainly seamless except when accelerating again after coasting back down to crawling speeds.

It should go without saying that the 50F only has two speeds — stopped or wide open. The latter is the case especially when trying to negotiate San Francisco’s notorious inclines. Without much room for a running start in most cases, the Zuma could manage a best of 15 mph up the steep grades, throttle cables stretched to the max. On flat ground, the 40 mph indicated top speed is attainable, but it takes around 15 seconds or so to get there.
Dashing through town to get from one checkpoint to the other, the Zuma is largely able to hold its own, though the struggle is finding the power needed to accelerate to merging speed when joining the flow of traffic.
2012 Yamaha Zuma 50FSuspension, wheels and tires are holdovers from last year. Ride quality is actually quite comfortable considering the basic suspension. More impressive is the 185mm wave-type brake disc that brings the Zuma to a stop quickly.
Considering my lack of seat time on the previous model, I asked others in attendance how the new four-stroke compared with the old two-stroke. All agreed that the seating position was more comfortable on the new machine. They also agreed that while the four-stroke makes more torque than the two-stroke, perceived top end felt better on the old scoot. I say “perceived” because top speed for both models peaks around the 40 mph mark.
On the suspension front, the tiny telescopic fork and single rear shock worked surprisingly well. San Fran’s bumpy roads were nicely soaked up by the suspenders, and only big potholes really upset the chassis. One benefit the 50F has is its light weight and nimble handling, allowing it to dash in between cars and obstacles in the way. Another asset is its brakes. A 180mm wave-type disc is 25mm larger than last years and has great stopping power. When combined with the rear drum brake, the Zuma comes to a halt very quickly. 
But Yamaha’s focus groups show that buyers of the Zuma don’t care about power or brakes. They want a practical mode of transportation that sips gas and accommodates their everyday needs. To that end the Zuma is undeniably capable. The underseat storage area swallowed up the helmet you see in these pictures, along with a jacket, gloves, and camera bag. Yamaha even claims there’s space for a full-face helmet in there, too, and I believe it. The pop-out hook features a snap closure to make sure items don’t “jump off” when hitting a bump, and the integrated cup holder is plenty big enough for a water bottle or even a Venti latte if that’s your thing (careful about the bumps with that one).
2012 Yamaha Zuma 50FIf your transportation needs include something that’s reliable, economical and practical, the Zuma 50F could be what you’re looking for.
As far as fuel mileage goes, after an entire day of running around San Francisco at wide-open throttle, the fuel needle hardly moved. As impressive as that was, the others in attendance, including the owner of Zumaforums.net, Jon Wegener, were also impressed. Wegener informed me that the real-world mileage numbers for his two-stroke Zuma are nothing close to the 123 mpg Yamaha claims. Instead, he gets around 60 mpg on his “tuned for mileage” gen-two Zuma and noted that he would have had to refuel if he took his ride on the day’s journey. If that’s true, then college students and urban commuters all over the country should pay the Zuma 50F some close attention. Your ride has arrived.
Available in Team Yamaha Blue, Alpine White and Raven, the Zuma 50F retails for $2540 and is available in dealers now. If a higher-speed scooter is required, the Zuma 125 returns for 2012 unchanged from the previous year, priced at $3350.

Yamaha and Star Motorcycles Model 2012

As the 2012 model year arrives and the economy is struggling to pick itself up, the major OEMs have stayed rather conservative on releasing new models — choosing instead to give their current lineup a refreshing of sorts, even if that only means adding a different paint scheme or new decals. The “Bold New Graphics” approach, as we industry types call it.
Yamaha and its cruiser line, Star Motorcycles, is one of those manufacturers erring on the side of caution with next year’s street lineup. This despite being the second-best selling brand for cruisers 900cc and up last year (behind some company from Milwaukee...), and with the Raider being the best selling “high end” metric cruiser above 1300cc for the same time period. On the sport side of things, Josh Herrin’s and Josh Hayes’ success on the YZF-R6 and R1, respectively, have done little to convince Yamaha to come out with something new. But that’s not to say the company doesn’t have some exciting surprises in store.


First some bad news: those hoping Yamaha would unveil a new YZF-R6 for 2012 will be disappointed. The same basic model we’ve seen since 2008 will see its way into another year, although freshened up with some different paint schemes. In fact, not only is the R6 the same from last year, the FJR1300A, FZ1, FZ8, FZ6R and WR250R are all copies of the 2011 versions with new colors and price hikes of $100 - $200.
On the Star side, models returning from last year are the V Star 950, V Star 950 Tourer, V Star 1300, V Star 1300 Tourer, Road Star, Road Star Silverado, Stryker, Raider and Venture. These are unchanged except for different color options and a price increase of $100 compared to 2011.
New For 2012
The following models all receive updates for 2012. Some are minor, while others are rather dramatic.
Yamaha YZF-R1

We begin with Yamaha and the YZF-R1, which is the only street motorcycle in its lineup to receive a significant upgrade for 2012. In keeping up with Kawasaki’s ZX-10 and many of the European sportbikes, the R1 will now be fitted with traction control featuring seven levels of intervention. Coupled with the R1’s existing three-level Drive Mode selector, the new ECU has 21 different settings to choose from. Details regarding the sophistication of the traction control and the amount of sensors involved were unavailable as of press time.

We do know the ECU settings get a tweak for better low-and-mid rpm response and the footpegs have been redesigned for better grip and contact with the rider’s boot. The top triple clamps are also revised, now with a more YZR-M1 MotoGP-esque look to them. Visually it may look the same, but there are subtle changes to the headlight cowling for a more aggressive appearance. In the rear, the exhaust heat shields and end caps get massaged for a svelter backside. To commemorate 50 years of Grand Prix racing, just 2000 R1s worldwide will be adorned with the 50th anniversary white and red color scheme Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies have worn at select races on the MotoGP calendar this year.

V Star 250

The machine that many riders started their motorcycle journey on is back for 2012 with a minor change. Instead of the sweeping handlebars on the previous version, Star is bringing the 250 in line with the times with a new, drag-style unit. Otherwise, the diminutive starter bike sees no other significant updates. Available only in black, err...Raven, the V Star 250 gets a $100 bump in price compared to 2011.
VMax

On the complete opposite end of the scale from the 250 is the VMax, Star’s power cruiser that ruled the muscle-bike category before the classification even existed. Like many models in Star’s 2012 lineup, the mighty Max gets only a smattering of cosmetic changes. This includes matching the side cover’s color with the intake cover and switching from red seat stitching to grey, to make the bike’s overall appearance more cohesive.
Roadliner S/Stratoliner S

In case you were wondering where the Roadliner and Stratoliner S were in Star’s lineup for 2011, Star’s Kevin Foley says “that due to the economic climate these models were ‘delayed’ for the 2011 model year to better balance supply in our dealer channel to current market demand.”
But the two are back this year and with a few changes. Market research indicated that consumers felt the “over the top” styling made the models a little polarizing. Responding to this criticism, the new Roadliner and Stratoliner feature a new tank emblem with a single bar instead of the tri-bar design previously employed. The front fender stay seen on the previous model is now removed, all in an effort to give the two models a broader appeal. The Roadliner is available in Seashell, while the Stratoliner comes in Intense Black.
Stratoliner Deluxe

With the Roadliner and Stratoliner being criticized for its polarizing design, it’s only natural that the Stratoliner Deluxe receive similar changes in the looks department. The fuel tank gets the single-bar tank emblem and gone is the front fender stay. When it comes to the Deluxe model, however, consumers also cried for more features. Star responded with an integrated iPod/iPhone player with controls located on the handlebar. Chrome trim now greets the speakers as well, but the most convenient feature is the new Garmin Zumo 665 GPS, Garmin’s top-of-the-line GPS designed specifically for motorcycle applications.
Integrated into the Stratoliner Deluxe’s audio system, the Garmin’s flip-down design makes it easy to reach the ignition or stow the unit away when off the bike. It can connect via Bluetooth to send directions directly to the rider’s helmet. With the optional Sirius/XM subscription you can listen to satellite radio and get weather, traffic and road condition warnings.
Raider/Raider S/Raider SCL

The Raider and Raider S return for 2012 virtually untouched from their 2011 iterations, save for different color options and a $100 bump in price compared to last year.
The big news from Star is a new concept called SCL, or Star Custom Line. Basically, SCL cruisers are “factory customs.” Similar in scope to Harley-Davidson’s H-D1 Customization program, SCL speaks to Star’s tagline of “We build it, you make it your own.”
Initially, the Raider will be the first model to get the SCL treatment, which includes a six-layer painting process of Blazing Orange with custom graphics, custom chrome wheels that were co-developed with Performance Machine, chrome belt guard, stainless mesh throttle cables and brake/clutch lines, and a genuine leather two-tone seat with color-matched stitching. Only 500 SCL Raiders will be produced, as noted by the numbered, limited-edition tank badge, and unfortunately, customers can’t pick and choose which options they’d like on the Raider SCL — you either take it or leave it. Also, if you’re thinking about making a replica of the SCL Raider yourself by buying these motorcycle parts through the Star accessories catalog, don’t bother — many of these items are exclusive to the SCL line.
2012 Yamaha and Star Motorcycles Model PreviewThe big news from Star is the introduction of the SCL, or Star Custom Line. Starting with the Raider SCL, buyers will have a chance to own a true factory custom without the exorbitant cost.

So far the SCL only consists of the Raider SCL, but expect SCL versions of other popular Star models down the pipeline. At $19,990, the Raider SCL is an attractive offer for a factory custom, and hopefully we’ll get to ride it, along with the rest of the 2012 Star line, come February during Star’s official press event.
